How to Become a Product Manager in India Without Prior PM Experience
Product management is less about a title and more about a way of working: understanding users, deciding what to build and what to cut, and getting a team to ship. Many good product managers started as engineers, designers, analysts or founders. Here is how to make the move.
In this guide 7 sections
At Creuto I run product with every client, and we are hiring a product manager to do it with me. The people who do well in product have one habit in common: they write things down clearly and decide what not to build. Everything else can be learned.
The core of the job
Understand the problem better than anyone, write it down clearly, and help the team ship the smallest thing that solves it.
Skills that matter
| Skill | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| User understanding | Interviews, support tickets and data turned into clear problems |
| Writing | PRDs, user stories and decisions others can act on |
| Prioritisation | Saying no, and explaining why |
| Technical sense | Knowing roughly how things are built and what is risky |
| Communication | Keeping clients, design and engineering aligned |
| Measurement | Defining success and checking it after launch |
Common paths into product
- From engineering: you already understand how things are built; work on user empathy and writing.
- From design: you understand users; build comfort with data, scope and trade-offs.
- From business analysis: you already write requirements; take ownership of outcomes, not just documents.
- From support, sales or operations: you know customers' problems; learn how software is planned and built.
- As a fresher: look for associate product manager roles and build visible proof of product thinking.

- Interview five people who use the product and summarise what you learned.
- Decide what you would cut, using a framework like our scoping framework.
- Publish the work as a short case study on LinkedIn or a personal site.
Product manager interview questions
- Tell me about a product decision you made and how you made it.
- How would you improve a product you use every day?
- How do you decide what goes into the first release?
- How would you measure the success of this feature?
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with an engineer or designer.
Answer with structure: the problem, the options, what you chose, why, and what happened. The Silicon Valley Product Group articles are a good source of product thinking to learn from.
Your first months in the role
- Learn the product, the users and the team before changing anything.
- Write down how decisions are made today.
- Ship one small, clear improvement end to end.
- Set up the few numbers you will track.

Frequently asked questions
Can I become a product manager without an MBA?
Yes. Many product managers do not have an MBA. Evidence that you can understand users, make good decisions and work with engineers matters more.
Can a fresher become a product manager?
Some companies hire associate product managers straight from college. More often, people move into product after a few years in engineering, design, analysis, support or sales.
What does a product manager do every day?
Talk to users and stakeholders, write and refine requirements, prioritise work, unblock the team, review designs and builds, and measure results after launch.
Do product managers need to code?
Not usually, but understanding how software is built helps you work with engineers and judge effort and risk.
