Legacy Application Modernization

Old systems keep businesses running, and also slow them down. We modernise them in stages: understand what the system really does, keep what works, and move to a modern base without stopping the business.

What we build

  • System discovery

Document what the old system does, who depends on it and where the hidden rules live.

  • Incremental migration

Move one module at a time and run old and new side by side until you trust the new one.

  • Data migration

Clean, map and move data in rehearsals before the final cutover.

  • Interface refresh

A modern web or mobile front end on top of stable business logic.

  • API wrappers

Expose old functionality through APIs so new products can use it.

How we approach Legacy Application Modernization

We begin by learning what the old system really does, including the rules that live only in the code and in people's heads. Then we choose the thinnest slice that can move first, run the new piece beside the old one and compare results before switching traffic. Each step has a way back, so the business keeps running while the system changes.

When this is a good fit

A good fit when

  • The original developers have left and nobody dares touch the code.
  • The system runs on technology that is hard to hire for or no longer supported.
  • You cannot afford downtime, so a full rewrite in one go is too risky.

How an engagement works

  1. 01

    Scope

A free strategy call, then a clear proposal with scope and priorities.

  2. 02

    Plan

A PRD and, where useful, a clickable prototype before building starts.

  3. 03

    Build

An in-house team builds in stages, with demos along the way.

  4. 04

    Launch and improve

Release, then keep improving with the people who built it.

Questions about Legacy Application Modernization

Rewrite or modernise in stages?

Staged modernisation is usually safer. A full rewrite can work for small systems, but for anything the business depends on we prefer to replace it piece by piece.

Will there be downtime?

We plan the cutover to avoid it where possible, by running both systems in parallel and switching in small steps with a way back.

What if there is no documentation?

That is common. Discovery starts with reading the code and the data and talking to the people who use the system, and produces the documentation you are missing.
