Software Developer Resume for Freshers: Format, Examples and Tips

As a fresher, your resume has one job: show that you can build things and learn quickly. Projects, skills and links to your work matter far more than objectives, hobbies or long descriptions of coursework.

When we review applications for internships and junior roles at Creuto, the resumes that stand out are short and full of proof: what the person built, with what, and where we can see it.

The rule

Every line should answer one question from the recruiter: can this person build things, and will they learn fast?

The format

  1. Header: name, city, email, phone, and links to GitHub, LinkedIn and a portfolio.
  2. Summary: two lines on what you build and the role you want.
  3. Skills: languages, frameworks and tools you can actually use.
  4. Projects: two to four, each with what it does, the stack, your part and a link.
  5. Experience: internships, freelance work or open-source contributions, if any.
  6. Education: degree, college and year.
  7. Extras: hackathons, certifications or awards, only if relevant.

How to describe a project

Made a to-do app in ReactBuilt a task manager in React and Node.js with login, reminders and offline support; deployed on Vercel (link)

Keywords for job portals

Naukri, LinkedIn and company career pages often filter resumes by keywords. Mirror the exact names in the job description, such as "React Native", "Node.js" or "REST APIs", wherever they genuinely apply to you. Keep the layout simple: one column, standard headings and no text inside images.

Common mistakes

  • Two or three pages for a fresher profile.
  • Listing every technology you have heard of.
  • No links to code or live projects.
  • Spelling mistakes and inconsistent formatting.
  • The same resume for every job, without tailoring.

Make your GitHub help you

  • Pin your two or three strongest repositories.
  • Write a clear README with screenshots and setup steps.
  • Commit regularly with meaningful messages.

GitHub's guide to setting up your profile is a quick win.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. Recruiters scan quickly, so keep only what shows you can do the job.

Should I include a career objective?

Usually not. Replace it with a two-line summary of what you build and the role you want.

What if I have no internship experience?

Lead with projects. Two or three well-described, deployed projects with code on GitHub can be stronger than a short internship.

Do job portals read resumes automatically?

Many use applicant tracking systems that scan for keywords. Use the exact skill names from the job description where they are true for you, and keep the layout simple.
