How to Get a Software Development Internship in India as a Student
Internships are the most reliable bridge from college to a software job. Companies offering them are not looking for experts. They want students who know the basics, have built something on their own and are clearly eager to learn.
In this guide 8 sections
We take on interns at Creuto in software development, design and marketing. The applications we move forward share three things: basic skills, one or two projects the student built alone, and a short, genuine note about why they want to learn with us.
The formula
Learn the basics of one stack, build two small projects end to end, put them online, and apply with a short, specific message.
What to learn first
| Track | Start with |
|---|---|
| Web development | HTML, CSS, JavaScript, then React and a little Node.js |
| Mobile development | JavaScript and React Native, or Dart and Flutter |
| Backend | One language (JavaScript or Python), REST APIs and SQL |
| AI | Python, APIs and the basics of language models |
| Design | Figma, layout, typography and user research basics |
Free, official resources are enough to start: MDN's web development course, the React docs and the Flutter docs.
Projects to build
- A simple app that solves a problem you or your college has, such as event registration or notes sharing.
- A clone of a small feature from an app you use, with your own improvements.
- A project with a backend and database, deployed online.

How to write to a company
Keep it short: who you are, what you have built (with links), what you want to learn and why that company. Mention one specific thing about their work. Attach a one-page resume; our guide to a developer resume for freshers shows the format.
Preparing for the interview
- Explain your projects clearly: what, why, how and what you would change.
- Revise basics: for web roles, our React interview questions are a good start.
- Practise a small coding or design task under time limits.
- Prepare a question or two about how interns are guided.
Making the most of the internship
- Ask questions early instead of staying stuck.
- Write short daily updates on what you did and what is next.
- Ask for code or design reviews and act on the feedback.
- Keep notes of what you built for your resume and future interviews.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start applying for internships?
From your second or third year of college, or earlier if you already have projects. Many students apply a few months before their vacation or final semester.
Do I need prior experience for an internship?
No. Internships are for learning. Basics in a programming language and one or two projects you built yourself are usually enough to get started.
Are remote internships worth it?
Yes, if the company gives you real work and regular feedback. Ask how interns are guided and what kind of projects they work on.
Should I do unpaid internships?
Be careful. Prefer internships with clear learning, real projects and fair terms, and never pay a company to give you an internship.
