UI/UX Designer Portfolio Tips: How to Build a Portfolio That Gets Interviews

Hiring managers spend only a few minutes on most portfolios. In that time they want to see how you think, not just how your screens look. A portfolio with three clear case studies beats one with twenty beautiful shots and no story.

We review design portfolios at Creuto when hiring designers and design interns. The ones that make it to an interview explain a problem, show the decisions and end with a result. Here is how to build that.

The rule

Every project should answer: what was the problem, what did you do, why, and what changed? Screens support the story; they are not the story.

Structure of a strong case study

  1. Context: the product, the users and your role, in two or three lines.
  2. Problem: what was not working and how you knew.
  3. Research: interviews, analytics or competitor reviews, and what you learned.
  4. Process: flows, wireframes and the options you considered.
  5. Final design: polished screens with short notes on key decisions.
  6. Result: what changed, or what you would test next if it was not launched.

What to include

  • Three case studies, ideally including one mobile app and one web product.
  • A short introduction: who you are and what you want to work on.
  • Evidence of collaboration with developers and stakeholders.
  • A clear way to contact you.

Mistakes that get portfolios rejected

  • Only final screens, with no explanation of the problem or decisions.
  • Long walls of text nobody will read.
  • Copying popular apps without a reason.
  • Ignoring accessibility, empty states and error states.
  • A slow or broken portfolio site on mobile.

If you are a fresher

  • Redesign a flow in a real app you use, and explain why your version is better.
  • Solve a problem for a local business, such as a booking or ordering flow.
  • Show your learning: the first version, feedback and the improved version.
  • Apply for internships; our guide on getting an internship in India covers the process.

Skills to show

Interviewers look for an understanding of UX and UI as different skills (see UI vs UX design), strong Figma skills, platform conventions from Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Material Design, and the ability to explain choices clearly.

In the interview

Walk through one case study in ten minutes. Start with the problem, not the tools. Expect questions like "What would you do differently?" and "How did you work with developers?" Be honest about constraints and trade-offs.

Working at Creuto

At Creuto designers work on real apps and web products for clients, remotely across India. See the UI/UX designer role, the UI/UX design internship and all open roles.

Frequently asked questions

How many projects should a UX portfolio have?

Three strong case studies are usually enough. Quality and clear thinking matter more than quantity.

Can I use concept projects?

Yes, especially as a fresher. Choose real problems, explain your research and constraints, and be clear that it is a concept.

Where should I host my portfolio?

A simple personal site, Behance or a well-organised Notion or Framer page all work. Make it fast to open on a phone.

Should I show Figma files?

Show polished screens and the process in your case study. Offer to share files in the interview if asked.
