What Decides App Development Cost in India? The 9 Factors Behind Every Quote

Ask five app companies in India for a quote and you will get five very different numbers. That is rarely because someone is cheating. It is because each team is pricing a different app in their head. These nine factors are what actually move the number, and once you understand them you can compare quotes properly and control your own budget.

I have scoped a lot of apps with founders and business owners, and the conversation about cost almost always starts in the wrong place: "How much does an app cost?" A better question is "What exactly is in my first release?" Cost follows scope. Here is how to think about it.

The short version

Features and integrations drive most of the cost. Platforms, design depth and the admin side come next. Get those four written down and every quote you receive starts to make sense.

1. The number and depth of features

A login screen and a profile page are quick. A booking flow with availability, payments, cancellations and reminders is a small product on its own. When you list features, write down the rules too: who can cancel, what happens to the money, what the user sees when something fails. Those rules are where time goes.

This is why I always recommend writing a short product requirements document (PRD) before asking for quotes. It forces the hidden rules into the open.

2. Platforms: Android, iOS, web or all three

Each extra platform adds design, development and testing time. Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native and Flutter share most of the code between Android and iOS, which narrows the gap. If you also need a web app or a web admin, that is a separate surface to plan for. Read our guide on mobile app vs web app if you are unsure where to start.

3. Design depth

A clean interface built from a standard component system is faster than a fully custom visual language with animations. Both are valid choices. The question is what your users need to trust you and complete the job. For most first releases, clarity beats decoration.

4. Integrations with other systems

Payment gateways, SMS and WhatsApp messages, maps, accounting software, an existing ERP or CRM: every connection needs setup, error handling and testing. Integrations with older internal systems are usually the slowest because their documentation is thin. List every system your app needs to talk to.

5. The admin side nobody sees

Most apps need a back office: someone has to approve vendors, issue refunds, edit content and see reports. Founders often forget this part, then discover it is a second product. Decide early what your team must be able to do without calling a developer.

6. Data, real-time features and scale

Chat, live tracking and instant availability need real-time infrastructure. Large catalogues need search and careful database design. None of this is exotic, but it adds work compared with an app that simply shows and saves records.

7. Security and compliance

Apps that handle payments, health information or personal data need stronger security work: encryption, access control, audit logs and testing against known risks such as the OWASP Mobile Top 10. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act also shapes how you collect and store personal data. Our mobile app security checklist covers the basics.

8. Who builds it

A freelancer, a small agency and a senior product team will all price differently because they carry different amounts of risk for you. Cheaper hourly rates can cost more if the scope is unclear and rework piles up. Our guide on how to choose a software development company has the questions to ask before you sign.

9. Launch, maintenance and support

App store submission, crash monitoring, bug fixes after launch and updates for new Android and iOS versions are ongoing costs. At Creuto every launch includes a 60-day post-launch warranty, and we agree maintenance separately so it is visible from day one.

Costs founders often forget

  • Developer accounts: Apple and Google charge their own fees to publish apps.
  • Cloud hosting: servers, databases, file storage and backups are monthly costs that grow with usage.
  • Third-party services: SMS, email, maps, payment gateway fees and AI model usage.
  • Content: product photos, copy, translations and app store screenshots.
  • Updates: new Android and iOS versions every year mean regular maintenance work.

None of these are large on their own, but together they belong in your first-year budget.

How to reduce cost without cutting quality

  1. Write a clear scope first. A short PRD removes the guesswork that inflates quotes.
  2. Launch the core job only. Move "nice to have" features to a second release.
  3. Use proven services for payments, login and notifications instead of building them.
  4. Share code across platforms where it makes sense; see native vs cross-platform.
  5. Review every milestone quickly so changes are caught while they are cheap.

How to compare quotes fairly

  • Same scope: send every company the same written feature list.
  • Line items: ask for design, development, testing, admin panel and launch to be priced separately.
  • Milestones: prefer payments tied to working software you can see.
  • Ownership: confirm the code lives in your own accounts. With us, it does from day one.
  • After launch: ask what support costs once the warranty ends.

Frequently asked questions

Why do app development quotes in India vary so much?

Because each company is quoting a different scope. One team prices a basic version with a simple admin panel, another prices a polished product with integrations, testing and support. Ask every company to quote against the same written feature list, ideally a short PRD, and the numbers become comparable.

Is it cheaper to build for Android only?

Building for one platform first can lower the first release cost. Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native and Flutter now let one codebase serve both Android and iOS, so the saving from choosing one platform is smaller than it used to be. Choose based on where your users are.

What hidden costs should I plan for?

App store developer accounts, cloud hosting, third-party services such as SMS, maps and payment gateways, ongoing maintenance and updates for new operating system versions. Ask for these to be listed separately in the proposal.

How can I reduce app development cost without hurting quality?

Cut the first release to the features users need to complete one core job, reuse proven services for payments, login and notifications, and agree on a fixed scope for each milestone. A clear PRD before development starts saves more money than any discount.

How do I estimate my app budget quickly?

Use a calculator to get a range, then have a short call with a team to turn your idea into a scoped first release. The range tells you the ballpark, the scoping call tells you what you will actually build.
