How to Build a Food Delivery App: Apps, Features and How to Launch
A food delivery product is really four products: a customer app, a restaurant app, a rider app and an admin panel, all connected in real time. Whether you are a restaurant chain building your own ordering or a startup building a platform, the planning starts in the same place.
In this guide 9 sections
We have built delivery products where speed and live status are everything, including the FlashNow quick commerce platform. Food delivery shares most of that foundation, with a few extra challenges: preparation time, hot food and restaurant operations.
Where to start
Launch in one area with a small set of restaurants and your own riders or a delivery partner. Get the order flow reliable before adding more cities.
The four pieces
| App | Who uses it | Core features |
|---|---|---|
| Customer app | Diners | Browse, cart, pay, live tracking, reorder |
| Restaurant app | Kitchen and counter staff | Accept orders, set preparation time, mark items unavailable |
| Rider app | Delivery partners | Accept jobs, navigation, pickup and delivery confirmation |
| Admin panel | Your operations team | Restaurants, menus, riders, payouts, refunds, reports |
Customer features for launch
- Location detection and delivery area check.
- Menus with item options, add-ons and availability.
- Cart, coupons and multiple payment options, including UPI.
- Live order status and rider tracking using a maps service such as Google Maps Platform.
- Order history, reorder and ratings.
- Support chat or call for problems with an order.

Book a free 30-minute call →The operational problems to solve
- Preparation time: riders should arrive when food is ready, not before or after.
- Menu accuracy: restaurants must be able to switch off items quickly.
- Rider assignment: based on distance, current load and expected ready time.
- Peak hours: lunch and dinner bring sudden load on the system and the team.
- Refunds and complaints: clear rules for missing items and late orders.
Payments and payouts
Most orders in India are paid through UPI, cards or cash on delivery. If you run a platform, you will also need to split payments between restaurants, riders and your commission. Our guide to UPI payment integration explains the options.
ONDC and your own app
The Open Network for Digital Commerce lets your restaurants be discovered through other buyer apps on the network. It can complement your own app. Many brands keep their own app for loyal customers and use networks for reach.
Compliance basics
Food businesses in India generally need registration or a licence from FSSAI, and you will need GST-compliant invoicing. You will also collect addresses and phone numbers, so plan for India's DPDP Act from the start.
How to launch
- Pick one area and sign a small group of restaurants personally.
- Run the full flow with real orders before marketing.
- Measure delivery time, order accuracy and repeat orders.
- Fix the operational issues, then expand area by area.

Frequently asked questions
What apps does a food delivery business need?
A customer app for ordering, a restaurant app or tablet view for accepting orders, a rider app for deliveries and a web admin panel to manage restaurants, menus, riders, payments and support.
Should a restaurant build its own delivery app?
If you have repeat customers and want to own the relationship and reduce commission costs, your own ordering app can make sense. Many restaurants use their own app alongside aggregator platforms.
What is ONDC and does it matter for food delivery?
ONDC is an open network backed by the Government of India that lets buyers and sellers on different apps transact with each other. Connecting to it can widen reach, and it is worth evaluating alongside your own app.
What licences do food businesses need in India?
Food businesses generally need FSSAI registration or a licence. Check the requirements for your specific business with FSSAI and your advisers.
How long does it take to build?
A focused first version for one area, with the core ordering, restaurant and rider flows, can be built in milestones. At Creuto the first working version typically takes about 4 weeks, with more features added after launch.
