How to Build a Telemedicine App: Features, Compliance and Launch Plan
A telemedicine app lets patients consult doctors by video, audio or chat, and receive prescriptions and follow-ups without visiting a clinic. The technology is well understood. The harder parts are trust, privacy and fitting into how doctors actually work.
In this guide 9 sections
Healthcare products earn trust slowly and lose it quickly. When I scope a telemedicine app, I spend as much time on consent, privacy and the doctor's daily workflow as on the video call itself.
Start here
Pick one type of care, such as follow-up consultations for one specialty, and make that experience excellent for both patient and doctor before expanding.

India's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines, published through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, set out how registered practitioners may consult remotely. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission provides the framework for digital health IDs and records. Involve medical and legal advisers early so the product follows both.
Privacy and security
Health data is among the most sensitive data you can hold. Build in:
- Encryption in transit and at rest.
- Role-based access, so staff see only what they need.
- Audit logs of who viewed or changed a record.
- Consent records and easy data access and deletion requests, as required by the DPDP Act.
- Secure video using an established provider rather than a custom build.
Our mobile app security checklist covers the technical side in more detail.
Video that works in real conditions
Many patients join from mobile data with uneven signal. Plan for automatic quality adjustment, a fallback to audio, reconnect on drop and a clear way to continue by chat. Test on low-end phones and slower networks, not only office Wi-Fi.
Launch plan
- Start with a small group of doctors who will give honest feedback.
- Run real consultations with a limited set of patients.
- Review call quality, no-shows and prescription accuracy weekly.
- Expand specialties and cities once the basics are reliable.

Frequently asked questions
What features does a telemedicine app need?
Patient registration, doctor profiles and availability, booking and payment, video or audio consultation, chat, e-prescriptions, consultation notes and follow-up reminders, plus an admin panel for the provider.
Are there rules for telemedicine in India?
Yes. Telemedicine Practice Guidelines for registered medical practitioners were issued in India in 2020. Your medical and legal advisers should confirm how they apply to your service.
What is ABDM?
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is the Government of India's programme for digital health records and IDs. Integrating with it can let patients share and receive health records across providers.
How do I keep patient data safe?
Encrypt data in transit and at rest, limit access by role, log who views records, keep consent records and follow India's DPDP Act. Health data deserves the strictest handling in your product.
Should I build an app or a web platform?
Patients often prefer an app for reminders and quick access, while doctors frequently use a web dashboard at their desk. Many products offer both.
Need a healthcare app built carefully?
We build patient, doctor and clinic apps with privacy and security planned in from the first design.
