PWA vs Native App: Which Should You Build for Your Business?

A progressive web app is a website that can be installed on a phone, work offline and send notifications. A native app is downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. For many businesses a PWA is enough; for others, store presence and deeper device access make a native or cross-platform app worth it.

Founders often assume they need an app in the stores. Sometimes they do. But I have also seen businesses spend months on store apps when their customers would have been just as happy with a fast, installable website.

The quick test

If your users mainly need to view, book, order or update information, start with a PWA. If they need deep device features or expect to find you in the App Store, build an app.

What makes a website a PWA

  • A web app manifest with the name, icons and colours, so it can be installed.
  • A service worker that caches files so it opens quickly and works offline.
  • HTTPS for security.
  • A responsive design that feels at home on a phone.

Google's web.dev guide and MDN's PWA documentation cover the technical details.

When a PWA fits

  • Ordering, booking and catalogue products.
  • Customer portals and dashboards.
  • Field tools where staff work with weak connectivity.
  • Content and news products that also want search traffic.
  • Testing demand before investing in store apps.

When a native app fits

  • Bluetooth, NFC, background location or heavy camera use.
  • Consumer products where store discovery and ratings matter.
  • Apps used many times a day that benefit from the smoothest experience.

If you go the app route, read native vs cross-platform to choose how to build it.

Doing both

Many products start as a PWA, learn what users do, then add store apps for the most engaged users. With a shared backend and, where possible, shared code, the second step is much smaller. Our guide on mobile app vs web app covers the order of building.

Common mistakes

  • Calling any mobile-friendly website a PWA without offline support or install.
  • Caching too aggressively, so users see old content after updates.
  • Skipping testing on iPhone, where some features behave differently.

How we decide

At Creuto we build PWAs, native apps and cross-platform apps, and recommend based on what your users need to do. See website vs web app if you are still deciding what kind of web product you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is a progressive web app?

A progressive web app is a website built with modern web features so it can be added to a phone's home screen, open like an app, work with a poor or no connection and, on supported devices, send notifications.

Can a PWA be listed on Google Play or the App Store?

PWAs can be packaged for Google Play. Apple's App Store generally expects apps to offer more than a wrapped website, so iOS store presence usually means a native or cross-platform app.

Do PWAs work on iPhone?

Yes. iPhone users can add a PWA to the home screen from Safari, and recent iOS versions support web push notifications for installed web apps. Some features are still more limited than on Android.

Is a PWA cheaper than a native app?

Usually yes, because one web codebase serves every device and there is no app store review. If you already need a web app, making it a PWA adds relatively little effort.

When should I choose a native app instead?

When you need deep device features such as Bluetooth or background location, a strong App Store presence, or the most polished platform-specific experience.
