Most small businesses in India get their first customers from word of mouth. But when someone hears your name today, they search for you on Google before they call. If they find nothing, or a slow, outdated page, many will choose a competitor. I build websites and web applications for businesses, and this guide covers the full process I recommend, including the free options.
The short version
Decide what the site must do (usually: bring enquiries). Register a domain. Choose how to build it: a free builder, WordPress, Shopify or a custom build. Create five to eight clear pages. Make it fast on mobile, set up basic SEO and a Google Business Profile, add WhatsApp and a contact form, then track and improve.
The steps at a glance
| Step | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Set the goal | Decide what visitors should do: call, WhatsApp, book or buy | An hour |
| 2. Choose a domain | Register a short .com or .in name | Minutes |
| 3. Pick how to build | Builder, WordPress, Shopify or custom | A day to decide |
| 4. Plan the pages | Home, services, about, work, contact and more | A day |
| 5. Write the content | Clear words, real photos, proof | A few days |
| 6. Design and build | Mobile-first layout, fast pages | A day to a few weeks |
| 7. Set up SEO | Titles, descriptions, structure, Search Console | A day |
| 8. Get on Google Maps | Create a Google Business Profile | An hour, plus verification |
| 9. Add lead capture | Contact form, WhatsApp, call button, analytics | A day |
| 10. Launch and improve | Test, publish, track, update monthly | Ongoing |
Step 1: Decide what your website must do
"We need a website" is not a goal. Pick the main action you want visitors to take:
- Enquiries: service businesses, clinics, consultants, manufacturers.
- Bookings: salons, clinics, coaching, rentals.
- Sales: shops selling products online.
- Trust: B2B companies whose buyers check you before a meeting.
Every page should lead to that action. If customers also need to log in, track orders or manage something, you need a web application, not just a website. Our guide to website vs web app explains the difference.
Step 2: Choose and register a domain name
Your domain is your address online, such as yourbusiness.com or yourbusiness.in. Keep it short, easy to spell and close to your business name. For a business focused on Indian customers, a .in domain works well; .com is familiar everywhere. Register it in your own name and account, not your developer's, so you always control it. The .in domain is managed by NIXI's .IN Registry, and you can buy it from any accredited registrar.
Use the same domain for a professional email address, such as name@yourbusiness.in. It builds far more trust than a free email address.
Step 3: Choose how to build your website
| Option | Good for | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free website builder | Getting online quickly at no cost | Fast, no coding, templates | Builder branding, subdomain, limited SEO and features |
| Paid website builder | Simple brochure sites | Own domain, easy editing | Monthly fees; harder to move later |
| WordPress | Content-heavy sites and blogs | Flexible, many plugins | Needs updates and security care; can get slow |
| Shopify | Online stores | Payments, products and checkout ready | Monthly plan and app costs; less flexible for unusual models |
| Custom website | Businesses that want leads, speed and a unique brand | Fast, SEO-ready, integrations, built around your goal | Needs a developer and a clear plan |
How I would decide: if you just need to exist online this week, start with a free builder and a Google Business Profile. If the website is meant to bring enquiries or sales, invest in a well-planned site: either a solid WordPress or Shopify setup, or a custom build when speed, integrations or a distinctive design matter. For online stores, read Shopify vs custom ecommerce.
Step 4: Plan the pages your business website needs
| Page | Purpose | Must include |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Say what you do, for whom and where, in seconds | Clear headline, main services, proof, contact button |
| Services (one page each) | Rank for each service and explain it | What it is, who it is for, process, FAQs, enquiry form |
| About | Build trust | Your story, team, location, credentials |
| Work or case studies | Show proof | Real projects, photos, results you can stand behind |
| Reviews | Social proof | Genuine customer reviews, ideally linked to Google |
| Contact | Make reaching you easy | Form, phone, WhatsApp, address, map, hours |
| Blog or guides (optional) | Bring visitors from search | Helpful answers to common customer questions |
| Privacy policy and terms | Legal clarity | How you handle customer data |
A separate page for each service is one of the simplest ways to appear in more Google searches. If you serve several cities, a page for each city you genuinely serve helps local searches.

Book a free 30-minute call →Step 5: Write content that sells
- Lead with the customer's problem, not your company history.
- Be specific: "Wedding photography in Bhubaneswar" beats "Capturing memories".
- Use real photos of your work, team and premises.
- Show proof: reviews, client names you have permission to use, certifications, awards.
- Answer common questions in an FAQ on each service page.
- Write in the language your customers search in; add Hindi or regional language pages if your customers prefer them.
Step 6: Design and build for mobile first
Most visitors in India will see your site on a phone, often on mobile data. Design for that first:
- Large, readable text and buttons you can tap with a thumb.
- A sticky call or WhatsApp button on mobile.
- Compressed images and minimal heavy scripts, so pages load quickly.
- Simple navigation with your main services one tap away.
Check your speed with Google's free PageSpeed Insights. A slow site loses visitors and ranks lower.
Step 7: Set up basic SEO
| SEO item | What to do |
|---|---|
| Page titles | Include the service and location, such as "Interior Designer in Bhubaneswar | Your Brand" |
| Meta descriptions | A clear one-line summary that makes people want to click |
| Headings | One H1 per page that matches what people search |
| Clean URLs | Short and readable, such as /services/interior-design |
| Structured data | LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema to help Google understand pages |
| Sitemap and Search Console | Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and watch for errors |
| Internal links | Link between related services and guides |
| Content updates | Add helpful guides and keep service pages current |
Step 8: Create your Google Business Profile
For local businesses, a Google Business Profile is free and often brings more calls than the website itself, because it appears in Google Maps and the map results at the top of local searches. Add your exact business name, category, address, hours, phone, photos and a link to your website. Then ask happy customers for Google reviews and reply to every review.
Step 9: Turn visitors into leads
- A short contact form on every service page: name, phone, what they need.
- WhatsApp click-to-chat: many Indian customers prefer it to forms. See our WhatsApp Business API guide if you want automated replies.
- A visible phone number and a tap-to-call button on mobile.
- Fast replies: answer enquiries within hours, not days.
- Lead tracking: use Google Analytics and send form leads to a CRM so none are lost.
If you want payments on your site, our UPI payment integration guide explains the options for websites and apps.
Step 10: Launch, maintain and improve
Before launch, test every page on a phone and a laptop, submit every form, check every link and make sure the site uses HTTPS. After launch, review your analytics monthly: which pages bring visitors, where they leave and which pages bring enquiries. Update services, add new work and keep software updated for security.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Registering the domain in someone else's name.
- One generic page for all services instead of a page per service.
- Slow pages with large images and too many plugins.
- No clear contact option on mobile.
- Stock photos instead of your real work.
- Building the site and never updating it.
When to hire a web developer
A website builder is fine to start. Hire a developer when the website must bring leads or sales reliably, when you need a custom design, bookings, payments, customer logins or integrations with your CRM or ERP, or when your current site is slow and not found on Google. Look for someone who plans pages around real searches, builds for speed and hands you full control of the domain, hosting and content.

Frequently asked questions
Can I create a business website for free?
Yes. Free website builders and a free Google Business Profile let you get online at no cost, usually on a subdomain of the builder. For a professional look and better trust, most businesses add their own domain name and a paid plan or a custom-built site.
How do I create a website for my business on Google?
Create a free Google Business Profile so you appear on Google Search and Maps, then link it to your own website. The profile shows your hours, location, photos and reviews; the website explains your services and collects enquiries.
How long does it take to create a business website?
A simple site on a website builder can be live in a day. A custom business website with planned pages, content and SEO usually takes a few weeks, depending on the number of pages and how quickly content is ready.
Do I need to know coding to create a website?
No. Website builders and WordPress let you create a site without code. A developer helps when you need a custom design, fast performance, integrations with other systems or features such as bookings, payments or customer logins.
Which is the right platform for a small business website in India?
It depends on your goal. Website builders suit simple brochure sites, WordPress suits content-heavy sites, Shopify suits online stores, and a custom build suits businesses that need speed, integrations or unique features.
How do I get leads from my website?
Make it easy to contact you from every page with a short form, a WhatsApp button and a phone number, make pages fast on mobile, write content around what customers search for, and track which pages bring enquiries.
