How to Hire App Developers in India: Freelancers, Agencies or a Product Team
India has one of the largest pools of app developers in the world, which is both the opportunity and the problem. Finding developers is easy. Finding the right ones for your product, at a stage where mistakes are expensive, takes a method. This guide is that method.
In this guide 9 sections
I run a product and engineering company in Bhubaneswar, so I see this market from the inside. There is great talent across Indian cities, and there are also teams that will say yes to anything. Here is how to tell them apart.
The one question that filters most options
"Who exactly will build my app, and can I talk to them?" Good teams answer immediately. Others go vague.
Your three main options
| Option | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Small, well-defined tasks | Single point of failure, gaps in skills |
| Agency | Full builds with design and testing | Work handed to junior staff after signing |
| Founder-led product team | Products where scope and quality matter | Fewer slots, so plan ahead |
Where to find developers
- Verified review sites: platforms like Clutch show reviews from real clients.
- Referrals: ask founders who have shipped similar apps.
- App stores: find apps you like and look up who built them.
- LinkedIn: check the people, not only the company page.
How to vet a team
- Ask for two or three live apps similar to yours and install them.
- Speak with past clients about communication and what happened when things went wrong.
- Ask how they turn your idea into a scope. A team that asks for a PRD or offers to write one is a good sign.
- Ask who owns the code and where it will be stored.
- Ask what happens after launch: warranty, support and updates.
Our full list of questions is in how to choose a software development company.
Want to talk to a team before you hire?
Book a free 30-minute call. Ask me anything about your app, our process or how we would staff it. No pitch, no obligation.
Book a free 30-minute call →Red flags
- A firm price quoted before anyone asks about your users or rules.
- No live apps you can download.
- Code kept in the vendor's accounts "for now".
- Payments that are not tied to working software you can see.
- Promises of a full product in an unrealistically short time.
Contract model
Fixed-price milestones suit a well-scoped first release, while time and materials suits ongoing work where priorities change. Our guide on fixed price vs time and materials explains both.
What to cover in the first call
The first conversation tells you a lot about how the project will go. A good team will ask more questions than it answers. Expect questions such as:
- Who are your users, and what is the one job the app helps them do?
- How do they solve this problem today?
- What must be in the first release, and what can wait?
- Which systems does the app need to connect to?
- How will you measure whether the launch worked?
If a team jumps straight to a price without asking these, the price is a guess.
What a good proposal contains
| Section | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Scope | Features listed with what is included and what is not |
| Milestones | Each one ends with working software you can try |
| Team | Named roles, and who your day-to-day contact is |
| Ownership | Code in your accounts, and when ownership transfers |
| After launch | Warranty period and support options |
Compare proposals on these sections, not on the headline number alone. Our guide to what decides app development cost explains why quotes for the same idea can differ so much.
How we work at Creuto
At Creuto you work with me directly, from the first call. We write the PRD first, build in milestones, keep your code in your own accounts from day one, and include a 60-day post-launch warranty. Our clients are in India, the US, the UK, Australia, Vietnam and more. See our case studies or read about who you would be working with.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for my app?
A freelancer can work for a small, well-defined task. For a full product with design, backend, mobile, testing and launch, a team is safer because one person rarely covers all those skills and there is no backup if they become unavailable.
Where can I find app developers in India?
Review platforms such as Clutch, referrals from other founders, LinkedIn, and developer communities. Shortlist teams that have shipped products similar to yours and can show them in the app stores.
How do I check if an app development company is good?
Ask to see live apps they built, speak to two past clients, read verified reviews, and ask who exactly will work on your project. A good team will also challenge your scope rather than say yes to everything.
What should the contract include?
A written scope, milestones tied to working software, who owns the code and when, where the code is stored, how changes are handled, and what support looks like after launch.
Who should own the source code?
You should. Insist that the code lives in your own GitHub and cloud accounts from the start, so you are never locked in.
Looking for a founder-led app team?
You work with me directly and a senior in-house team builds it, from PRD to App Store and Google Play.
